It
is well known as the most famous beach in the Cuban coasts. Tourist of
all over the world visit the place searching for fresh air, clean sands,
safet and comfortable accommodation in four and five stars hotels.
In late 17th century, the place was already famous as it housed the La Calavera salt mines, for many years the only one in the socalled New World, and rich enough to provide salt for all Havana and for Spanish fleets that at least twice a year stopped there for rest and re-supply.But the area's definitive renow came after word got around regarding the wonders of it Varadero beach, which stetches 20 735 meters along almost the lenght of the Hicacos Peninsula. it was indeed thanks to a decision by the Decembiros, a communal society from Cárdenas, that the Varadero village was established, on December 5th, 1887, as a recreatiion site, easily reachable by sailing across the bay of Cardenas.
Yet,
it was not until the 1910's that, barred from traveling to Europe due
to the World War I, the wealthy Cuban Creole class set their eyes on the
pristine enclave. The area had its first hotel (of only 10 rooms and also
called Varadero) in the year 1915.
In the 50’s, in the 20th century began the projects for the first constructions which where used by the owners as retirement houses for long period of vacations.
Nowadays Varadero and Havana City are the most important touristy destination
in Cuba.
